Maghtab sound mirror

A 200-foot mirror was built at Maghtab on Malta, and is known locally as Il-Widna, or "the ear". Jack Anderson-Sanger took thse pictures in May 2003.

The Malta Aviation Museum Foundation's Malta Flypast 5 had an article on sound mirrors in Malta. Five mirrors were proposed, but only the Maghtab one was built. Their coverage would have overlapped, though for some reason the area around Gozo would have been left without coverage.

The front of the mirrors still shows faded camouflage painting.

The satellite dish on the extreme right is owned by Maltacom, the island's telecoms provider, which is why the site is fenced off. On the top of the left hand side of the fence there's a plastic carrier bag caught in the barbed wire - it's not a blemish on the photo! Notice too how the back is camouflaged to hide the mirror.

Location

The mirror is about a mile from the coast at Maghtab, about four miles northeast of Mosta on the island of Malta.
